The salt spray test is a standardized test method used tocheck corrosion resistance of coatedsamples. Coatings provide corrosionresistance to metallic parts made ofsteel,zamak orbrass. Since coatings can providea high corrosion resistance through the intended life of the partin use, it is necessary to check corrosion resistance by othermeans. Salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion test thatproduces a corrosive attack to the coated samples in order topredict its suitability in use as a protective finish. Theappearance of corrosion products (oxides) is evaluated after aperiod of time. Test duration depends on the corrosion resistanceof the coating; the more corrosion resistant the coating is, thelonger the period in testing without showing signs ofcorrosion.
Salt spray testing is popular because it ischeap, quick, well standardized and reasonably repeatable. Thereis, however, only a weak correlation between the duration in saltspray test and the expected life of a coating, since corrosion is avery complicated process and can be influenced by many externalfactors. Nevertheless, salt spray test is widely used in theindustrial sector for the evaluation of corrosion resistance offinished surfaces or parts.
